Mental Health series: 2 | Signing up for online therapy

So, you have recognised you may be struggling with a problem that can't be faced alone but like many people, have too much self pride to go to your local GP and reach out for help. So I guess that means you`ll have to face it alone, right? Not at all! First of all, the fact you recognise there is an issue is the first step in making progress to getting better. If you ARE the type of person who has too much self pride to ask a stranger for help but also realise that you are facing challenges your family may not understand and aren't able to give you the correct support in, then I suggest looking into signing up for online therapy.

Signing up for therapy with BetterHelp is a quick and easy process and whilst you may decide you are ready to talk to a therapist, the advice on offer will give you some guidance and support. Whilst going through therapy myself, I was quick to realise that my improvements weren't anything to do with the fact I had a councillor and that they were making significant changes to my life, but it was the simple fact in knowing someone was there. Hence the reason I believe you should sign up to BetterHelp just to begin feeling apart of a community of support and knowing it is there if you need it!

What is online therapy?
Online therapy is the chance to have counselling one to one with a therapist who is matched with you depending on your answers to the asked questions in the sign up process (which i will discuss shortly). Then, at the reach of a phone, computer or tablet, your therapist is ready to advice you whenever, wherever you need it. It also gives you the opportunity to stay anonymous which means you don't have to worry about losing any self pride as only you will know you have been using the site!


  1. You will be asked a series of questions. Don't worry, they are nothing too detailed! They just want to know basic information about you so they can match you with the right therapist! Questions include gender, age, relationship status and then some more personal questions such as: How good your physical health is, eating and sleeping habits and employment status. 
  2. Once you have finished the questionnaire, you are then required to sign up with your email and create your nickname if you don't feel comfortable giving your real name. 
  3. Once the email is verified, you will then be asked some further questions. This will be about you therapist and any requirements you have from them. These questions include preferred gender, religion and sexuality of your therapist as well as their speciality.
  4. Then the final step! Whilst Looking for your match, you will be offered the chance to either make your weekly session payments or check to see if you are eligible for financial aid to cover the costs. 
I received my match in less than 12 hours! 

Getting therapy through BetterHelp is less than half the price as it is when getting counselling through an in office service in America. And For those in the UK who have the chance to get it free with the NHS but prefer the idea of getting online counselling, the chance to get financial cover is there so you still have the chance to receive your private online therapy.
